Helping people build green buildings

Since 2000, John Stivers has focused on helping architects, engineers, contractors and suppliers build green buildings.

John Stivers contributes to the energy discussions on www.Energy-101.org.

In collaboration with Catalyst Partners, he co-managed the development of LEED for Commercial Interiors Rating System under contract to the US Green Building Council. His part of the work, which began at the inception of the pilot phase, included preparation of the technical aspects of the agenda of the LEED-CI Core Committee, proposed ruling of credit interpretation requests, analysis of pilot phase project credit achievement, and participation in the third-party certification review process.

He served as the principal writer of the LEED-CIv2.0 Reference Guide, striving for full explanations of the requirements and procedures. For example, this was the first reference guide in which threshold levels for exemplary performance levels were explicitly stated, and project submittal requirements explained for each prerequisite and credit. This work gave him direct access to volunteers and staff members of all the Technical Advisory Groups, LEED-CI Core Team members, and LEED for Core & Shell Pilot Team members.

He has also served as the LEED Project Team Administrator on numerous projects, registered and certified using LEED for New Construction and Major Renovation, LEED for Commercial Interiors, and LEED for Homes.

John took his first LEED training in 2000, passed the LEED 2.0 Professional Accreditation exam in 2001, and the LEED for Commercial Interiors (beta) version in 2006.

He is a founding member of USGBC-West Michigan Chapter, was on its board of directors for four years, and served as its first treasurer.

In 2005 he teamed up with other LEED-APs to develop a course to familiarize building professionals with the LEED rating system, many of whom go on to take the LEED Professional Accreditation exam offered by the Green Building Certification Institute. At the three-year anniversary of this class, over 700 members of the design and construction industry in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin have attended.

In association with the Green Building Alliance, Pittsburgh, PA, he has been the associate instructor of their full-day course Building Products for the Green Market: Essential Know-How for Manufacturers.

John Stivers earned his Bachelor of Civil Engineering and Masters of Engineering (Environmental) from the Speed School of Engineering, University of Louisville. From 1975 to 2007 he was a licensed Professional Engineer in Kentucky.

During his career, he has been a part of the project management of buildings throughout North America, Great Britain and France. Prior to starting his own company, John Stivers was employed by Cummins Engine Company, F. A. Wilhelm Construction Company, and Herman Miller, where he was director of facility management.
